A crowd of ex-soldiers and Fascists mobbed and beat the Minister of Justice, M. de le Yeleye, sponsor of the recently-passed bill providing for an amnesty for wartime traitors, when he inspected the Law Courts now under construction at Mons. An assailant tore out a handful of M. de lc Veleyc's liair. Battered and bleeding, accompanied by his secretary, the Minister ran the gauntlet for 100 yards to his car, in which he accomplished a rapid retreat from Mous. King Leopold received representatives of ex-servicemen who protested against the amnesty. His Majesty ap|>ealed for national loyalty and pointed out that, since the amnesty law had been passed, opposition to it was unavailing, nor could a referendum be held.
