SCENE AT GENEVA.
Mr. Eden Alters Mr. Jordan's Spanish Speech. STRONG ACTION AVERTED? GENEVA, May 30. All Geneva is discussing a strange scene involving the British Foreign Secretary, Mr. Eden, and the Xew Zealand High Commissioner, Mr. VV. J. Jordan, who is reported to havs intended to invoke Article X. of the Covenant, dealing with external aggression against territories of member-States. While Mr. Eden's speech was being translated into French Mr. Eden walked over to Mr. Jordan and began to point his pencil at certain passages in Mr. Jordan's speech. Finally several members of the British delegation surrounded them, and Mr. Jordan was seen making some alterations. Mr. Jordan then rose to speak, and made an innocuous plea in favour of moves to secure a cessation of hostilities in Spain. Mr. Jordan and other Xew Zealanders decline to discuss the incident. The League Council adopted a resolution regretting that certain States had not heeded the resolution of December 12 urging respect for the territorial integrity and independence of Spain, but expressing satisfaction at the progress of non-intervention, urging withdrawal of non-Spanish combatants and condemning bombardment of open towns.
