SPECIAL VERSE.
NATIONAL ANTHEM.
COMPOSED IN DOMINIGN.
APPROVED BY EDWARD VII,
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, this day.
It is recalled by a Wellington resident.' Mrs. J. J. Mackersey, that many years j ago an additional verse to the National! Anthem, with special application to New! Zealand, was composed by a relative of] hers and forwarded to King Edward] VII. The King signified his approval of! the verse by signing a copy of it and! returning it, as a souvenir, to the author. The verse, Mrs. Mackersey said, was written by her cousin, the late Mr. E. IS. Emerson, who had hoped that it would be included in the Anthem when it was sung in New Zealand. Unfortunately his ambition was not realised and few, if any, of the public to-day knew the existence of the verse. It was intended as the third verse of the I Anthem, and was as follows: —
Far from the Empire's heart, Make us a worthy part,
God Save the King. Keep us forever Thine. Our land Thy southern shrine And in Thy grace divine God Save the King.
