OTAHUHU BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Otahuhn Borough Council met last evening the Mayor, Mr. C. R. Petrie, M.P., presiding. Grass in School Grounds.—lt was decided to accede to the request of the school committee and cut the graee in the school grounds free of charge. Several members of the council expressed the opinion that the school authorities should make an effort to keep it cut. Albert Street Sewer Extension.—The engineer reported that work in connection with this scheme was progressing very satisfactorily, and the excavating on the main line had been completed and six manholes concreted. The gang had been shortened down by the dismissal of eix men, leaving eight men to complete. In answer to a question by Mr. Grey, the Mayor stated that the men who had been dismissed would be reinstated when the new extension was commenced. Community Lighting.—The successful effort of Newmarket business people in launching their community lighting system was referred to by Mr. F. W. Grey, who asked if Otahuhu could not do something of a similar nature as part of the scheme to commemorate the Coronation In quoting figures to show the economy of the new system Mr. Grey stated that the individual cost would vary from 3/6 to £1 per month for lighting, "according to the number of lights used. Street Collection.—A communication was received from tho Auckland Medical Aid Committee for Spain asking for permission to conduct a street collection in the UorouKh. and requesting permission for representatives of the committee to address the council. It was de-ided to receive thr letter but to refuse the committees requests. Stiirsc* Park.—The number of men engaged in Stufges Park was 17, and work was being carried out in planting grass in the extended arra cm the east side, also levelling and trimming the track on the south side. Turfing is being carried out on part of the track at the commencement of the banked area. When this has been completed work will be concentrated on the banked track on the west side. Report, Pumping Engineer.—The relieving pumping engineer reported that everything a.t the pumping station was running satisfactorily, and the water in the well has dropped about 4in, but recovers on standing through the night. During the two weeks ending February 21, 2.603.000 gallons of water had been pumped. Building Permits.—During the last two weeks building permits of a total value of £230.') have been issued, and two plumbing permits to the value of £60.
