TELEGRAPH CABLES.
OVERHAUL UNDER WAY.
SERVICE TO NORTH SHORE,
Work wa» commenced this morning cm the general overhaul and inspection of the submarine telegraph cable connecting the city with the North Shore euburhe. Under the direction of the central district engineer, Mr. G. W. Gilchrist, the entire length of the cable from Devonport to Point Resolution will be inspected and where necessary repaired. Mr. Gilchrist has had considerable experience in submarine work.
The exact time that the work will take to complete is not known, as the cable hafi not been lifted before. It is known,- however, that there are several faults where water has entered the cable and damaged the insulation, and the work should therefore be extended over a month.
The methods used are quite simple. Two punts are moored a short distance apart and the cable is suspended between them. As each section passes over the decks of the punts it is subjected to a thorough, foot-by-foot examination. Xear the shore the cable is buried under the sand, but further out it lie* straight along the bottom. Little difficulty was expected in raising it from the bed of the harbour.
The Telegraph Department is soon to commence the laying of «t new underground cable between Devonport and Takapuna.
