LOCAL BODIES.

NEW LYNN BOROUGH. An ordinary meeting of the New Lynn Borough Councxi .was held last evening. The Mayor, Mr. Geo. Lawson, presided, other members present being Messrs. A. J. Jeffrey, Geo. Severne, A. Woolley, S. Hards, l l '. Carter and C. Drury. Health Stamp Campaign.—A circular letter from the Director-General dealt with the raising of funds for children's health camps. The council resolved to assist on the lines of last year's effort. New Lynn Bowling and Croquet Clubs. — The Mayor and councillors were invited to the ollicial opening on October 24. The council agreed to attend. Local Government Officers' Guild. —A communication from the Auckland District Local Government Officers' Guild requested the council to consider the provision of a five-day week for all its officers, in particular the professional and clerical staff. The council will observe a five-day week as from November 1 next. No business will be transacted on Saturdays. Street Lighting.—The Waitemata Power Board advised the council that it was replacing the present radial wave type of street lighting fittings with the latest type of Holophane fittings to improve the efficiency of the borough lighting. ,This would be done without extra cost to the council. Twenty lamps would be replaced before March 31, and the council was asked to advise a definite location for the new lights. The matter was left in the hands of the works committee, with a recommendation that the lighting facilities in the centre of the borough be improved. Bicycle Registrations.-—The traffic inspector reported that the total registrations to date totalled over 400. Testing Motor Car Brakes. —The council resolved to register its protest against the proposal to ccmpel motorists to have their brakes tested twice a year at an annual cost of 10/. Members were of the opinion that the present system, strictly applied, would be more efficient and afford greater safety to 'the public. Water Consumption.—The turncock reported upon the water consumption in the borough during the past six months. With the complete metering of the borough the loss of water had been reduced from 31 per cent to 13 per cent. The consumption, as compared with the corresponding six months of last year, was 11,015,000, as against 15,222,000. Average usage per head per day on population of 3490 was 10 gallons. No. 5 Scheme.—The borough engineer reported that the new rate of pay brought about a different grouping of men working under this scheme. The increased cost to the borough would be £2 10/8 per week. The council had not budgeted for this increase. It was decided to ask the Unemployment Board to carry this increase until March 31, or it would mean the placing of more men on sustenance.
