STEEL CASEMENTS.
NO STATE MANUFACTURE. Assurance lias been given by the Minister of Railways, the Hon, D. G. Sullivan, that although certain inquiries have been made by his Department in connection with the provision of steel window casements for a particular work, the Government is not at present contemplating the general manufacture of steel casements by the railway workshops, even to meet Government requirements. Advice to this effect was received at yesterday's meeting of the Auckland Manufacturer's Assoeiatiou. It was explained that concern had been expressed by New Zealand manufacturers of casements at the possible entry oy the Government into this industry, i.i view of the fact that there was already adequate plant to fill the Dominion demand, and that the Government itself was a very large consumer of the existing manufactures. The New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation had made representation to the Minister to this effect.
