WAITAKERE PIPE LINE WORK. i ' MEN ON SUSTENANCE. As a result of the reconditioning of the Waitakere pipe line having been completed with the exception of the coupling up of a few pipes,. 35 men who have been employed on the work have now been placed on sustenance. The cliairmaii of the water works committee of the Auckland City Council, Mr. C. Bailey, pointed out this afternoon that the job was undertaken purely as an unemployment relief measure, and that the council had employed a maximum of 70 men at a time on the work, which had been in progress since July, 1934. The men had never been permanent employees of the council. If the men . reported to the placement officer their chancer of being engaged on the Waitakere Scenic Drive job would no doubt be equal to that of other men.
