MANUKAU BY-ELECTION.
Mr. Doidge, the National candidate at the recent Mamikau 'by-election, attributes his defeat to the superior organisation of the Labour candidate. This is rather laughable when it is remembered that the poll was a particularly heavy one. and it its hardly to be supposed that all those who did not re.sistir their votes were supporters of the Xational candidate who were unable to secure cars to take them to the polling- booth. Again, there i,5 the remarkable statement of Mr. Doidge that the Labour party i<3 no longer bothered about party funds, in as much as under the compulsory unionism legislation the party will have the use of the contributions of 400.000 unionists—approximately £500,000 a-uumlly— for political electioneering purposes. Where does Mr. Doidge get the idea that all union funds will become the property of the Labour party? I have been a member of a union in this city for 15 years, contributing 1/ P er week, and never to my knowledge have any of the funds of ihis* union bde:i used frr political purposee , , nor, in my opinion, could they be so applied under the registered rules of this union. UNIONIST.
