PRICE OF ORANGES.
We are indebted to Mr. B. Stevens, Premier of New South Wales, for the information that the Australian price of oranges is such as would enable them to be retailed in New Zealand at about 1/ to 1/6 per dozen and mandarins at from 6d to 1/, according to 6ize. The result of the embargo has not cheapened potatoes in New Zealand, the present price of which is 2d per lb; and iu any case, the potato grower, now knowing he cannot export, could grow carrots or some other crop, and lees potatoes. Citrus fruits are essential for children as well as adults, but who can afford to buy them at the present shop prices of three shillings a dozen? If we must protect the potato grower, why not give him a subsidy? In fact any measure rather than deprive people of a very valuable diet, which is considered by the best medical authorities to he an essential food. The embargo, . when first employed, was quite in order; but it has now served its purpose and outlived its usefulness, and the worst feature is that the present position hits the poor. D. BRADLEY.
