WORLD DAY FOR ANIMALS.

To-morrow, Sunday, October 4, is the day dedicated to the memory of St. Francis of Assisi, when there goes forth a world-wide plea on behalf of the animals and birds, that they may be liberated from the cruelties and agonies inflicted on them. They need the help and I am asking through your paper if the clergy, ministers and teachers will unite on that day in their prayers, petitions and supplications to remember the animals and birds, whose cry has been going forth for a long time asking for their wrongs to be redressed. Wa are continually waging war on them night and day, year in and year out. The slaughter of thousands of animals and birds yearly for consumption should be done as humanely as possible. Thousands of animals are tortured annually to try to obtain cures for diseases. Some of the animals are very beautiful. We are desirous of getting that beauty, not caring or think ihg of the cruelty • of. the steel trap set to obtain the skin so that we may be the proud possessor of it. For our amusement, sport and pleasure We chase, hunt, shoot, etc., these creatures. Can we not be quite as happy without all this killing of these creatures 1 Do we ever stop to realise the fearful forces we are liberating on the ether? They return again -with renewed vigour and strength—wars, 'murders, crimes, unrest, etc., are the results. We throw the ball, it bounces back trailing what we have sent out, and more. "When we give the animals and birds their rights our world will be a purer and happier abode. Children should be taught kindness to animals and birds also, that they feel and suffer as human beings do. A kindly feeling will then go on with them to years of maturity and create a bond of sympathy and understanding between both. I. NOBLE.
