COMMUNITY SINGS.
The weekly sings this year have had more new songs on the programme than in previous years, but you find only half the people join in the singing of the new songs, whereas all join in the singing of the old ones. New songs introduced in recent years have certainly been popular for a time, but for beauty of words and rhythm of music you must turn to the old songs. To further illustrate my point, the Friday night sings this season introduced a very old song entitled "The Farmer's Boy"; very few present had heard it before, yet before the close of the season this proved to be the most popular number. As stated by your correspondent "Forward," millions of songs have been introduced since "PollyWolly Doodle," but the fact remains that the "Polly" song is as popular to-day as ever. Simple folk songs express the life of the people, and your correspondent "Forward" will need to 1 look backward to find the best and most popular songs. D. BRADLEY.
