EXPRESSES DELAYED.
PETROL. WAGON DERAILED. HOLD-UP NEAR HALCOMBE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) 'PALMERSTON NORTH, this day. Rail traffic was disorganised until 10 a.m. as the result of a 3(i-ton petrol wagon on a goods train leaving Palmerston North for the north at 1 a.m. breaking an axle and leaving the rails near Halconibe. The usual procedure in such an accident is to unload the derailed wagon and to jack it off the rails, but the petrol prevented this action.
Both the South-bound expresses were held at Marton to enable passengers to be transhipped in daylight. Seven trains were affected by the mishap.
Later advice was received that the derailed wagon had been got back to the line by a crane brought from the North.
Auckland railway officials report that all arrivals at Auckland were up to time.
