MRS. JULIAN BROOK.

The death has occurred at 158, St. John's Road, Remuera, of Mrs. Mary Brook, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Mackay, of Woodside, Waipu, two of the original settlers in that historic 'Gaelic settlement. Born at Waipu, Mrs. Brook spent her early years there, and in 1889 married Mr. Julian Brook, then headmaster of the Waipu Central School. She lived later in East Tamaki, Puni and Birkdale, being a well-known resident of the latter place for 21 years. Mrs. Brook was an active guild worker during the war, being president for the whole period of the war of the Queen Mary Guild in the district. She was very actively interested in Presbyterian Church .work. On Mr. Brook's retirement in 1923 the family moved to Remuera, where Mrs. Brook lived until her death. Her eldest son, Lieutenant Julian C. Brook, died of wounds in France in 1918, after serving in the New Zealand Epeditionary Force in the Main Body. Mrs. Brook is survived by her husband, two daughters, Mrs. R. F. Kay (Birkdale) and Mrs. J. C. Robertson (Te Kuiti, and two sons, Messrs. C. S. Brook (Te Kuiti) and M. A. Brook (C'oromandel), and two brothers, Messrs. ,J. A. S. Mackay and A. J. Mackay (both of Whangarei).
