FRAUDULENT RETURN
UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS. | MAN TO PAY FINE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. "It is very unfortunate that the Court has no power to impose a term of imprisonment upon men who make false statements under the Unemployment Acts," said Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., to-day, in dealing with a case in which a family man, earning about £5 a week, had been obtaining benefits to which he was not entitled. The magistrate said the case merited the maximum fine, but the man was simply not able to pay it. He imposed a fine of £7 10/ on. one of the three charges, with costs, and costs only on the other two charges.
