BUILDING TIMBERS.
VALUE OF MACROCARPA MOUNT EDEN DISCUSSION. The value of macrocarpa as a building timber was discussed by the Mount Eden Borough Council last night when an application to be allowed to use macrocarpa ill the erection of a dwelling-house was received. Mr. A. P. Hartnoll said that before coming to a decision the council should get an expert opinion on the value and suitability of macrocarpa for dwellings. Mr. S. E. Chappell said the council should adhere to its previous decision which did not permit macrocarpa to be used. To grant the present application would open the door to quite a number of timbers being possibly used which were questionable, and the timber would possibly come down to motor car cases. If there was a shortage of timber it might be a different matter. The Mayor, Mr. T. McNab, said he personally considered macrocarpa better than rimu. "But we don't want to take on any Court case over the matter, and I think we should pass it on to someone else,"' he added.
On the motion of Mr. W. T. Gatenby, it was decided to get the opinion of the Public Works Department, also that of the Institute of Architects on the value and suitability of macrocarpa for dwellings.
