FAIR RENT QUESTION.
GRAMMAR BOARD'S HOUSES.
TO BE TAKEN UP IN COURT. In an endeavour to have a fair rent fixed for eight houses owned by the Auckland Grammar School Board, a decision was made at a meeting of the board yesterday to refer the matter to the Court. The rent on the houses had been increased from 22/6 to 27/6 in March, but a communication, from the Labour Department had advised that on the Government valuation such an increase was unwarranted in the case of three of the houses, and recommended that the rent be made the same for all eight houses.
"It is the landowner that is oppressed, not the tenant," said Mr. A. St. Clair Brown, after suggesting that the question be referred to the Court.
A decision to place the matter in the hands of the hoard's solicitors was made.
