LAMB AND BEEF AWARDS. SMITH FIELD'S JUDGMENT.: Nine prize lambs from tlio Auckland A. and P. Show,- shipped to by the steamer Empire Star, were judged at Smithfield by Messrs. S. Finter and S. Denniston, whose award was: as follows: Pen No. 3 (N. Reid), l;,; pej>' No. 2 (N. Reid), 2; pen No. 1 (W: Massey), 3. The judges said that pen No. 3 contained two particularly good lambs, but points were lost by the weakness of the third. The "three in pen No. 2 were very nice weight lambs, but not quite finished, one especially being weak and inclined to a high colour. The quality of the three lambs in pen No. 1 was as good as that of the first prize winners, but one was very highly coloured. Weddel and Company, who exhibited the latnbs, also had on display a consignment from the Westlield works of 28 quarters from prize cattle at the Auckland A. and P. Show. The beef was shipped by the motor ship Rangitiki, and 45 days elapsed between killing and marketing. Gas staining was again evident, but the quality of the beef was such that it made within a fraction of a penny per lb of the price of Argentine quarters. "Smitlifield's opinion was that this was •good butcher's meat'; 'although'conformation was uneven and a few quarters were rather wasteful," states the Pastoral Review." "It may be mentioned, however, that expert opinion at Smithfield did not tally very closely with the views of the judges in New Zealand."
