TIME EXTENDED.
MEAT FOR THE UNEMPLOYED.
SUBSIDY TO BE CONTINUED,
Information lias been received in Auckland that the Government has agreed to continue until September 30 the subsidy paid to enable relief organisations to sell. meat, at cheap to recipients of relief. ■ The amounting to ljd a lb on all meat sold at the meat depots, was discontinued as from May 31 because it was held that the increased rates of relief pay would make help unnecessary.
Consequently the depot in ..Freeman's Bay was closed last Friday, but the Auckland \Metropolitan Unemployment Relief Committee deckled to reopen it in order to assist the families of men on sustenance. The committee also asked the Government to grant a subsidy until September 1.
The Government, however, has done more than this. The date has been extended a month, until September 30, while, the subsidy is to be continued to all existing organisations in charge of meat pools.
Those eligible for relief will be required to produce a special card to prove their eligibility. The caTd is one stamped eafh week: by the Labour Bureau, and one of the conditions of the extension of the subsidy is that the presentation of the card is to be rigidly enforced to prevent abuse of the cheap meat r»ies. Meat fronj the depots will be available to all who are entitled to relief, which includes those working under No. 5 scheme or are on sustenance, but does not apply to men working full time whose wages are subsidised by the Government.
