SEPARATE BOARD.
EDUCATION CONTROL
NORTH AUCKLAND SCHEME.
Proposals to effect radical changes in the control of education in North Auckland were submitted at a meeting o£ representatives of school committees held at the Whangarei primary school on Thursday, but owing to the conference not being well attended nothing definite was arrived at. Short notice accounted for only about 15 of the 62 schools circularised having delegates present. It was decided, however, to convene another meeting in a month's time, when the merits or otherwise of the schemes will be discussed.
Last night's gathering was for the purpose of discussing the formation of a School Committees' Association for. Whangarei and district, and the setting up of a separate education board.
Mr. J. E. Elliott, of Dargaville, a candidate for the position on the Education Board as representative of the Northern Ward, was present hy invitation.
In outlining the scheme for formation of an association, Mr. Stringer said the move was guided by the knowledge that it would benefit the schools. Unity was strength, and he would like to see all schools represented. H. Atmore, when Minister of Education, had favoured smaller boards and Mr. Stringer contended that the present system Tinder the Auckland Board was too cumbersome. "We should put our own house in order," he said. "North Auckland could easily be cut up into small wards, with Whangarei the ideal centre. We get good service under the present order, but with a North Auckland Board it would be much better."
