HARBOUR WORKS.
DISPUTE AT WHAKATANE. COUNCIL REFUSES PLANS. <By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHAKATANE, this day. The decision of the Whakatane Borough Council to refuse acceptance of the sub-divisional plan of the Harbour Board's Strand extension reclamation was discussed yesterday by the board's works committee. The clerk read correspondence giving the whole history of the proceedings and showing the board's desire to enter into an agreement for the construction and dedication of a new access road. The chairman, Mr. J. W. Summer, in •expressing surprise at the council's action, pointed out that motor cars had been obtained and members of the council had been taken out to inspect the pegging of' the road in the presence of the engineer. They went as far as McOarvey's Road and were so satisfied with what they .saw that the party did not go 011 to King Street. Mr. Summer said he could not now understand the shuffle. He suggested a sub-committee should meet the borough councillors and later attend a meeting [ of the council and urge the acceptance of the dedication without delay and so avoid an appeal to a higher authority. On the motion of Mr. Tickner it was resolved that a committee, consisting of Messrs. Sumner, Boon. Brown and the clerk should wait upon the council and explain the position with the object of obtaining co-operation and securing the dedication of the road. The committee will also deal with the width of the road. Mi - . Sumner was re-elected chairman of the board and was congratulated on his past services.
