NOVELTY CARNIVAL,

METRIC TITLES TO-NIGHT.

The Ponsonby Club's carnival at . the Tepid Baths to-night promises to be one full of competitive interest, and the bright novelty side- of the programme has been well catered for.

Violet Coltliurst, of Parnell, will attempt Miss Ena Stocßley's Auckland and New Zealand record for 50 yards, time being 2S l-ss, and created in Mi.reh, 1929.

100 metres men's Auckland championship has drawn quite an impressive lie-id. Noel Crump, tiie record holder, -will lie opposed by Bob Frankham, Pat Hannan, H. Colmore-Williams, Bob Buchanan and J. C. Mitchell. The indications are that the record will be broken, and as Noel Crump proved at Pukekohc. last week that he is right on tiie top of his fbrni, the race will be a real thriller. ,

The 200 metres ladies' Auckland championship should see Mona Leydon break the New Zealand rocord of 2.45 4-5, which record is at present held by Miss Leydon. Misses Barton Ludlow and White will constitute the balance of the lield.

100 metres intermediate boys' Auckland championship lias drawn ' a iieJd of six. Allen Pascoe is opposed by M. Cleary, H. G. Itickerby, G. Reed, It. Dalton and \V. Warren. 00 metres intermediate girls' Auckland championship will have to be run in two heats and a linal, there being nine acceptors.

The 33 l-3yds veterans' race will be swum in two heats and a linal. There are 14 acceptors, comprising swimmers of former days: Bill Gibbons, Stump Campbell, Harry Key, Bill Stevens, Johnny McQuillan, Jackie Gibbons, Toni Bakalich, A. Adams, Frank Delgrosso, G. Davis, G. Holden, Leo Kenny, Chas. Woods, Shorty Worden. The event is a handicap race for a gold cup.

An exhibition of fancy diving will be given by a troupe of loading Auckland divers: G. Berry, 11. Hogg, E. Midgeley, T. Mortimer, B. Welsh, H. Neale, A. Kay, R. Laud, with Ike Harp supplying tho humour.

Other events include: A burlesque race over a length of the baths, and a burlesque water polo match. The first half of the latter will be played a la Rugby, with scrums, knock-ons and freo kicks, and all the second half will be played under Soccer rules. The proceeds of the carnival will be devoted to the queen carnival fund to tiie credit of Mona Leydon, Ponsonby Club's champion, New Zealand title and record holder and Olympic aspirant.

AUCKLAND CENTRE.

RACING NEAR TO TIMES. The following resolution was carried at the weekly meeting of the management committee of the Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association : —"That all clubs be notified that tli• centre's rule re automatic disqualification of handicapped swimmers who break their assessed times by more than two seconds in distances of 50 yards to 60 2-3 yards, and three seconds in 100 yards, be rigidly enforced.

"In order to help tho clubs carry this out, one member of the handicapping committee will be on the board to collaborate with the referee for handicapping check and subsequent action." ■

Also, all clubs are instructed that four judges are necessary at their carnivals to take first, second, third and fourth placings in all the events.

WAITEMATA CLUB

AUSTRALIANS NOT COMING. Owing to the lateness of the season, tho proposal to bring to New Zealand the Australian lady swimming champions, Miss Evelyn do Lacy, of Perth, and Miss Pat Norton, of Sydney, a selected Olympic representative, has been definitely abandoned by tlie Waitemata Amateur Swimming and Life-Saving Club. The club was recently granted permission- by the Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association to extend an invitation to the two girls.

TED LOOMB WINS TAMAKI CUP,

The Otahuhu Swimming Club's effort to popularise swimming in the suburban districts received great support yesterday morning on the occasion of the annual river race for the Tamaki Cup. All previous attendance flgures»wcre passed. The course on the Tamaki River at Otahuhu is a hard one to handicap, and yesterday the limit swimmer, Ted Loomb, 17m, and Camplin, 17ni, made great use of their starts and did not give the back markers any chance to overtake them. C. R. (Bob) Buchanan was the scratch man and when he left the board Looinb had almost completed the first leg of the course. Turning round the buoy on the run for home, the order was Loomb, Camplin, Miss L. Gray, .Underwood, Miss M. Galloway, O'Kcefc, Ueslier, Taylor, Billings and Buchanan. On tiie swim home, the limit swimmers had the advantage of the incoming tide, but the back-markers were unfortunate to strike the turn when a third of tho home journey had been completed. The actual limes were: —T. Loomb (Otahuhu), 32.8, 1; L. Camplin (Waitemata), 37.0, 2; Miss L. Grey (Otahuhu), 32.41, 3; Bliss M. Galloway (North Shore), 32.42, 4; W. O'Keefe (Waitemata), 29.2t5, 5; W. Billings (Mount Eden), 27.11, 6; G. Usslier (North Shore), 31.0,7; P. Underwood (Waitemata), 37.35, 8; F. S. Taylor (Waitemata), 32.29, 9; and C. 11. Buchanan (Waitemata), 26.10, 10. Taylor swam breaststroke over the whole distance. C. R. Buchanan returned fastest time and W. Billings and W. O'Keefe were second and third fastest respectively.

A junior and intermediate club half-mile race attracted eleven entries and was very keenly contested. The race was over an oval shaped course of 440 yards, right in front of the point, and nearly all the competitors completed the distance. The result was:—Stuart Rippon (21m), 1, actual swimming time, 14.50; Kath Grey (3m), 15.38, 2; and Colin Brown (4m), 18.9, 3. -Tlie latter youth swam breaststroke and put up a very creditable performance. Joycc Jameson (7m), the youngest competitor, swam exceptionally well, having a good lead on the first lap, but tired near the finish to swim into fifth place.
