STRIKE AVERTED.

Workers Accept Owners' Wage Increase Offer. BETTER TERMS PROMISED. (Received 10.30 a.m.) LOXDON, January 24. A coal strike has been averted Avith the mineworkers' decision to accept their leaders' advice and agree to the owners' offer of 1/ per dayincrease. The men demanded 2/, but a large majority carried the resolution of acceptance.

While it is considered that the owners' offer is unsatisfactory, as it does not afford the miners the standard of living to which they feel they are entitled, in view of the owners' undertaking that a national joint consultative committee would be created to discuss wages and other matters the terms were agreed to. The wage increase offer is taken as an instalment towards further improvement which the selling schemes should make possible. A British official wireless message states that a national delegate conference of the Mineworkers' Federation met to-day to hear the report of its executive on the amended offer of the owners. After a resolution of condolence with the Royal Family had been honoured in silence, the delegates voted on a recommendation accepting the owners' terms. In making the recommendation the executive committee was strongly influenced by the desirability of avoiding industrial disturbance in* the present circumstances of the nation, and by the keenest possible desire to prevent loss and injury to the public who have so loyally supported the miners' claim, ilie recommendation was accepted on a card vote by 360,000 votes to 112,000, witt $4,000 aiatainiafr
