HELD RESPONSIBLE.
DRUNKEN CAR OWNER. ALTHOUGH NOT DRIVING. COMPANION AT THE WHEEL. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNE DIN, this day. Although only a passenger in his own car, Gustave Neilson, aged 40, was held by Mr. H. W. Bundle, S.M., this morning to have been in charge of the car while intoxicated. He was sentenced to three weeks in gaol. The car, which collided with a taxi, was driven by Jack W. Brockie, aged 25, who 'pleaded guilty to a similar charge and was fined £10, and had his license suspended for a year.
It was argued for. the defence that Neilson couldn't be convicted as he didn't drive at any stage, and that Brockie's admission disposed of the case, but the magistrate held that Neilson was not. so helpless as would prevent him from forming an opinion, and that he should bo convicted, as he had allowed another intoxicated person to drive the car. It was Neilson's second offence. The possibility of an appeal was intimated.
