CENTRE POLES.
WORK OF REMOVAL. ONLY 14 REMAIN FOR CLOCKS. The work of removing tramway centre poles and replacing them with span supports has been carried to a successful conclusion at a lower cost than was originally anticipated, stated a report by the engineer, Mr. I'. E. tie Guerrier, which was tabled at to-day s meeting of the Auckland Transport Board. "There now remain only 14 centre poles, used as clock poles, but these are specially lighted and are in positions where % traflic hazard is not created, continues the report. "The cost including feeder additions amounted to £30,000, viz., £12,000 for pole removal and £18,000 for feeder alterations. Tile alteration to feeders has co6t about £17,000, while the actual removal of the poles and the erection of the spans has cost less than £9000. "The reason for the reduced cost of this latter item lies in the success achieved in interesting other authoiities in our effort to improve the amenities of the streets and so sharing the cost of erecting joint pole lines. This improvement is particularly evident in streets such as Jervois Road, where the removal of the centre poles and the substitution of the regular line of good quality poles for a nondescript selection of old poles of various types has transformed the appearance, of the street. Where buildings of a substantial character face the street, as in Queen Street, advantage has been taken of the opportunity of using eyebolts for the attachment of span wires and so eliminating poles altogether."
