IN A GOOD CAUSE.
CONCERT AT HIS MAJESTY'S. CRIPPLED CHILDREN'S FUND. Many talented artists appeared on the stage of His Majesty's Theatre on Saturday night, when a well-varied programme was presented in aid of the crippled children's endowment fund. There was a fair attendance, but the entertairment offered was deserving of a full hoasc.
Among a series of items performed with finish and charm, perhaps the most outstanding were the dances of Betty Spiro, in particular the sequence in which her movements illustrated the life of a butterfly. In merry contrast were a spirited Highland dance and Irish jig. Miss Spiro also appeared in an operatic dance and in dances depicting a serenade and a ballet girl's dream, and contributed other items with Berin Spiro, who also gave vocal solos.
With a presentation of Strauss' everpopular "Blue Danube" and other items, the Roland Sextet won prolonged applause from the audience. A choir from the Mount Albert Boys' Grammar School sang in impressive contrast "The Hardy Norseman" and "Cradle Song," and later "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny" and "Old Faithful." Vocal numbers were given by Jack McCarthy and Una Mateer, who also gave a piano solo. Patricia Lind presented a character dance, arid Betty Spiro, Ruth De Berg, Elsie Fletcher. Gwen Hill, Joan Best, A. Clark and G. Knight ' conti-ibuted a tap dancing item. Aerobatics by J. C. Bonham, F. Wells, N. Stevens and G. Curtice, of the Y.M.C.A. gymnasium, drew hearty laughter from the audience. A display of tumbling was given by members of the Y.M.C.A., while Ruth McMahon and Lilian O'Connell, arid G. D. Campbell and N. Middleton, also of the Y.M.C.A., presented a novel item, "Circles of Fire." Community singing was led by Mr. Vernon Drew, with Mrs. Barrington Snow at the piano. Mr. G. Boyle acted as master of ceremonies. Miss Lyndall Burley accompanied the concert items and Mr. W. Saul acted as piper.
