PROTECTION SOCIETY.
DEDUCTION ORDER DISCUSSED. The monthly executive meeting was held yesterday in the society's rooms and presided over by Mr. W. A. Bishop. The secretary reported a very heavy month's work covering 97 cases:—Domestic troubles, 35; affiliation cases. 5; children and girls, 9; carnal knowledge, 1; various, 18; and okl cases reopened, 29; office interviews, 720; visits to homes and institutions, 132; magistrate's courts, 9; children's court, 5; maintenance money received and paid to clients, £149 10/3. A discussion took place on the recent order of the Department of Labour n-ivin"- notice of the .cancellation of deduction orders of relief pay where there is no court order or where the signature of the husband has not been obtained. The society has always made a definite stand to, as far as possible, avoid putting cases through the court. In the past it has been possible, in cases recommended by the society and approved by the officers of the Department, to secure a measure of relief pay for the family by means of a deduction order, with or without separation and without publicity. The president of the society, Mr. Ernest Davis, has taken the. matter up with the Department, with a view to having this decree rescinded, as its enforcement would result in much hardship to women and children. Mrs. A. M. Hutchinson, a delegate to the National Council of Women Conference recently held in Dunedin, gave a full and interesting report, particularly on those questions in which the society in its welfare work for women and children is interested. The financial secretary reported bavin"' obtained 24 new members during the month. A successful bridge afternoon was also arranged by the ladies' committee for the benefit of the society's funds.
