LAWN TENNIS.
BIRKDALE CLUB The hard courts of the Birkdale Tennis Club were on Saturday officially opened for the season by the deputy-Mayor of Birkenhead, Mr. Albert Hadfield. The president, Mr. W. S. Garrett, welcomed the large gathering, the visitors including Mr. W. A. Bishop, chairman of the Waitemata County Council, members of the Birkenhead Borough Council, and the Mayoress, Mrs. G. Mills. Mr. A. E. ICnowles announced that the Rosebery Club had decided to disband, and many of those players have joined flic Birkdale Club. Mrs. Garrett, wife of the president, served the first ball over the net. An American tournament was played during the afternoon. PAPAKURA CLUB. A record number of 120 players was present at the official opening of the Papakura Tennis Club on Saturday afternoon. Messrs. Harrison, Pierce and L. Williamson represented the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association. The official opening ceremony was performed by the president, Mr. J. R. Wilson. He served the first ball, which was received by the club captain, Mr. G. F. McDonald. During the afternoon a Yankee tournament was played. The winners were .R. Watson and Mrs. A. Evans. ZION HILL CLUB. The Zion Hill Tennis Club courts in Oiiewa Road, were opened on Saturday by the deputy-Mayor of Birkenhead. Mr. Albert Hadfield, who congratulated Hie club on the good condition of the courts, the full membership and satisfactory financial position. Mrs. 11. Eccles served the first ball.
