TENNIS AT BIRKDALE.
SUCCESSFUL OPENING FUNCTION. The Birkdale Tennis Club's official opening for the season on Saturday afternoon was a most successful function. The club will be strengthened by several members from the Rosebery Tennis Club, which has decided not to function, the cost of maintaining separate courts to its Birkdale neighbour being a factor in influencing this course. The president, Mr. W. S. Garrett, welcomed the large gathering, which included the Mayoress, Mrs. G. Mills, members of the Birkenhead Borough Council and representatives of various local organisations, and also Mr. W. A. Bishop, chairman of the Waitemata County Council. Play was initiated on the courts by Mrs. Garrett, wife of the president, playing the first ball over the net, the courts being declared open by the deputy-Mayor, 'Mr. Albert Hadfield. Among those present were: Mesdames W. S. Garrett, G. Mills (Mayoress), A. Hadfield, J. Prickett, A. E. Henley, E. J. Sinel, L. R. L. Moller, E. J. Osborne, G. B. Hewson, H. Sumner, H. W. Chetwynd, G.
