BIRKENHEAD VETERAN.

EIGHTY-EIGHTH BIRTHDAY. In celebration of his eighty-eighth birthday to-day, a family gathering was held yesterday at the home of Mr. Alex McGilp, Hinemoa Street, Birkenhead. Mr. McGilp came to New Zealand in 187G in the sailing ship Orari, and served for 35 years in the police force. He was stationed successively at Bay of Islands, Hokianga, Cambridge, Waipu and Grey Lynn, and was then placed in charge of the new station at Birkenhead.

He is the only survivor of a party of 12 police who, reinforced by 12 bushmen as special - constables, took part on July 22, 1887, in a raid against the Hauhau Maoris at Waihou, near Russell. Fourteen men and nine women were taken prisoners after shots had been fired and batons used.

Mr. and Mrs, McGilp havo seven children living and 10 grandchildren. Three other children died.
