NO BY-ELECTION.
MID-CANTERBURY VACANCY. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Prime Minister has stated that no by-election will be held in MidCanterbury following the death of Mr. J. Connolly. The procedure followed when a member dies during the progress of a session is that a resolution is passed by the House of Representatives directing the issue of a writ to fill the vacancy. ' However, as the general election is so close at hand the Government does not intend to submit this motion. If a by-election had been held it would have taken place on the basis of the old roll, though the contest during the general election will be fought with the new roll.
