SECOND TEST.

"ASHES" AND CUP.

NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIA

THH.II.IiIN G GAME EXPECTED

The second Test match between New Zealand and Australia of the 1935 scries—tho sixth in the whole 27 years' history of the code—will be staged at Carlaw Park to-morrow and, in view of tho Dominion's striking win in tho first contest, is commanding interest throughout tho country. Another success by the Itugby League All Blacks will mean that New Zealand will liavo won the "Ashes" and the honour of being first holders of the handsome Courtney Goodwill Cup for competition between Australia and New Zealand. It would not be the first time New Zealand has created a surprise in international play, for in 1924 England, after defeating Australia, had to bow in defeat to New Zealand. The present Kangaroos constitute the second Australian team to throw down the gauntlet to New Zealand, the first all-Australian team to como this way having a victorious tour in 1919. It was a magnificent team, but not considered to have the reputation and brilliance of the 1935 Kangaroos led by Dave Brown. However, it has been evident that the Australian authorities liavo not been alive to the sound progress made by tho game here, and New Zealand has welcomed the chance to emphasise the need for greater co-operation between the two countries. The visitors, having beaten Auckland by iG—S and a combined team at Wellington 47—31, were shocked on Saturday when they lost the first Test 14 —22. New Zealand's Chance.

With a win in hand and strengthened by the inclusion of a new back and forward in key positions, the New Zealand team will take the field with confidence. In the previous match it mastered the opposition in spite of not seeing the ball from the scrums. With K. Ward, Canterbury hooker, on duty the position may be different to-morrow, and the side is capable of brilliant constructive play, particularly with the assistance of Lou Hutt as breakaway. Hunt, the Taranaki representative, only has to reproduce the form he struck at Wellington last week to win credit. It is a very powerful and fast side all round. The Australian team, which probably will be almost entirely a New South Wales combination, is sure to make a special bid for victory. The visitors have been training hard yesterday and to-day to have themselves in perfect condition to exploit new tactics for the occasion. Much as New Zealand admires and respects the Kangaroos, the home thirteen is likely, for the first time for many years, to be favourites for a second Test, which should not Lick in speed and glamour. The match, preceded by a schoolboy curtain-raiser at 1.45 p.m., will commence at 3 p.m. The teams' are announced as follows:— Australia. (Green ami Gold.) Full-back: L. Ward (N.S.W.), J. Whittle (Q.). (One to be omitted). Three-quarters: R. Hincs, D. Brown (captain), R. McKinnon, S. Goodwin (N.S.W.). Five-eighths: E. Norman (N.S.W.). Half-back: V. Tliicknesse. Forwards: F. Cumin, P. Fairall, R. Stehr. J. Gibbs, S. I'earce, W. Gibbsj (N.S.W.), 11. Eicliel (Q.). (One to be omitted). New Zealand. (All Black.) Full-hack: A. E. Cooke, captain (Auckland). Three-quarters: L. Brown (Auckland), C. Hunt (Taranaki), E. Mincham (Auckland). Five-eighths: A. Kay and S. Prentice (Auckland). Half-back: R. Powell (Auckland). Forwards: J. Calder (West Coast), R. SCHOOL, CHILDREN INVITED.

COUNCIL ARRANGEMENTS. At the meeting of the council of the New Zealand Rugby League last evening it was decided to write the Auckland Education Board extending through it an official invitation to primary school pupils of the district to visit free of charge the second Test match between Now Zealand and Australia at Carlaw Park to-morrow, and to request the board to grant whatever facilities lies within its power to enable the children to avail themselves of this invitation. Mr. Cyril Sneddon presided, and, in addition to routine matters in connection with the Australian team visit and fixtures, arrangements were put in hand for entertaining the tourists and New Zealand players at a special evening, when the Courtney Goodwill Cup will be presented. A conference is also to be held with the Australian managers on various matters of moment to the game in both countries.
