LEVEL CROSSINGS.

ELIMINATION PLAN.

TWENTY-SEVEN SELECTED,

WORK TO START SHORTLY.

WELLINGTON, this day

Twenty-seven level crossings have been selected for elimination by the Main Highways Board, the Unemployment Board and the Railway Board, according to an announcement made today by the Minister of Public Works, Mr. Bitchener.

The Minister said that as soon as the first instalment of the programme was in hand a further selection would be made in order that the preliminary work for the whole scheme could be completed. The work would be put in hand almost immediately.

As already announced, it is proposed to spend £120,000 per annum for the next three years on this gcheme. The crossings to be dealt with in the first instalment are as follow:—

Whangarci District.—Two crossings south of Hikurangi, * which it is proposed to elimina'to by deviating the highway; the Iloteo crossing, for which an ovcrbridgc is proposed.

Auckland District. —Tirau crossing, To Kauwhata crossing, Huapai crossing (North Auckland), Hopuhopu crossing, near Taupiri, for which overbridges are proposed, and the AVailii crossing, where a deviation is to bo made.

Tauranga District.—Turakenga crossing (near I'otorua), where a subway is considered tho best solution.

Napier District. —Maharahara crossing (South Dannevirke). There are two crossings closo together at this point; and a highway deviation will eliminate theso for all traffic except an inconsiderable amount of local traffic. Waitangi crossings (South Napier); a relocation of the new Waitangi Bridge at present in hand will eliminate these crossings.

Tamnarunui District. — Oio crossing (South Taumarunui) and Piriaka crossing (South Taumarunui), for which overbridges are proposed.

Stratford District. —Nonnanby crossing, for which an overbridge is proposed; Ngacrc crossing, for which either a subway or an overbridge is proposed.

Wanganni District. —Kai-iwi crossing (North Wanganui), for which an overbridge is proposed.

Wellington District. —Porirua crossing and Longburn crossing, for which overbridges are proposed. Paraparaumu crossing, for which either an overbridge or a subway is proposed.

Greymouth District.—Brunner crossing (North Greymouth), for which an overbridge is proposed.

Ghristchureh District.—Styx crossing (Nortli Christchurch) and Sockburn crossing (South Christchurch), for which ovorbridges are proposed.

Dunedin District. —Kartigi crossing and Palmerston crossing, for which overbridges are proposed; Deborah crossing, for which a subway is proposed.

Invercargill District.—Lorncville crossing. for which an overbridge is proposed,

The Minister added that there arc special features in design for each of the above crossings.
