"BURY THE HATCHET." M.C.C. Captain's Suggestion on Eve of Departure. AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. TOURS. (Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, September 27. "Possibly there's a hatchet to bury; let's bury it if we can," said E. R. Holmes, the captain, at a farewell luncheon to the Marylebone touring cricke't team on the eve of departure for Australia and New Zealand by the Orion.

Holmes added that the. team was looking forward to the five matches in Australia. "I am sure we shall not lose sight of the fact we are playing cricket as a game. We can bat, and also—at least in England —we can bowl, while we are aiming to establish a reputation as the finest fielding team to leave these shores. But though we are anxious to win, it is not of vital importance. We do often think too much importance is attached to the results of cricket matches, including Tests."

Sir Cecil Wrav, reading a cable from Sir James Parr, New Zealand High Commissioner, said lie was sure Mr. Parr was watching the Suez Canal to ensure the team a safe passage.

Mr. Arthur Sims, the New Zealand Cricket Council representative in England, said he was sure the Australians would welcome the team despite the fact that 11. D. Read (the fast bowler) might be so nervous in his first over that he might hit his own toes with the first ball and kill somebody with the second.
