SAMOAN FAREWELL
SIR HERBERT HART
ROUND OF FESTIVITIES.
KAVA CEREMONY AND FEAST. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Many farewell entertainments were held in honour of the retiring Administrator of Samoa, Sir Herbert Hart, and Lady Hart, and numerous presentations were made testifying to the esteem and affection in which they are held by both the European and native sections of the community, writes the Apia correspondent of the Press Association.
The final farewell was given at Mulinuu, an historical epot in Samoa, and the seat of the native Government here. Sir Herbert was met by chiefs of villages adjacent to Apia and was their guest at a kava ceremony and subsequent feast.
The final departure of Sir Herbert and Lady Hart by the Maul Pomare was witnessed by a large gathering of Europeans and Samoans. The natives gave a musical farewell, and a convoy of four native long boats escorted the official launch to the steamer.
A salute of 15 guns, fired by the shore battery, signalled Sir Herbert Hart's final relinquishment of office.
Mr. A. C. Turnbull, of the Adminis irator's staff, is now acting as Admin istrator.
