Debt services cost £9,780,028, compared with £10,397,332. Interest paymerite amounted to £8,023,812, as against £8,830,407 in 1933-34. Administration and management cost £117;732, as compared witli £01,04.-). Payments under the Repayment of Public Debt Act, 192;"), section 11, totalled £1,578,293, compared with £1,392,257. Under the heading grants and subsidies, the payment of a proportion of the totalisator ctnty to racing clubs amounted to £27,289, the amount in the preceding year being £26,404. The contribution toward the cost of the Singapore naval base was again £100,000. Highways Expenditure. . Expenditure on highways totalled £1.i)8(i,904. compared £1,201,837: The details are asi folio _wY" Tyre tax. j fees and fines transferred to the main highways account, £483,353; tax on motor spirits transferred to the- main highways account, £970,500; tax; onmotor spirits paid to boroughs, j £110,748; expenses of collecting, and | making refunds. £21,073; motor vehicle* mileage ta.t and pennlties, £1284. A sum of £903,071 was epent on \ defence, £437,839 going to naval defence and £405,232 to general defence. The, corresponding figures in 1933-34 were naval £397,384, and general defence £204,723, the totnl being £002,107. I On the development of primary and j secondary industries the expenditure last year totalled £933.020, compared with £1,030,741 in the preceding year.
