BRIAN BORU COMPANY.

PUTTING DOWN OF BORES. A statement concerning the operations on the west coast of the South Island of the Brian Boru Gold Dredging Company, .Limited, has been made by the Minister of Mines, Hon. C. E. Macmillan. In the course of his remarks the Minister said: "No certificate in connecton with boring on the property of the Brian Boru Dredging Company was ever furnished by any Government officer prior to' March, 1835, when several bores were put down at the request and the expense of the company by tho drill superintendent of the Mines Department. ' The Mines Department In 1!)."U hired one of its keystone drills to a Mr. A. Donucllnu to enable boring to be carried out. The drill superintendent of the Mines Department was present while the tlrst bore was being put down for the! purpose of instructing the crew in the use of the machine, but he had nothing whatever to do with the determination of the measurement of the gold values obtained In the first bore. The superintendent was not associated Jn the slightest degree with the putting down of any of the other bores." ' Mr. Macmillnn said that the department had paid Mr. Donncllan a subsidy of £59 in connection with the original bore. This sum was refunded upon .the formation of tho company. Similar subsidies had l>een paid to many other persons and companies, but in no case did the Government certifv to results.
