GOLD AT THAMES.

THE SYLVIA MINE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) THAMES, this day. The recent return of £1941 from 50 tons of stone at the 'Jhames School of Mines is encouraging to investors. A small company was formed in Auckland last May to take up the old Sylvia ground, which was worked with varying success many years ago. The new compuny cleaned up the No. 4 level for a distance of 1000 ft and retimhered it at a cost of about fIOOO. A winze was then started to connect with the No. 5 level. Fifty tons of ore was taken out and treated for the handsome return of nearly £2000. This gives the lucky investors their money back twice over and a very valuable mine into the bargain. Many thousands of tons of ore are in sight. It is considered that the reefs will widen out and become richer as they go down, and should exist to at least GOOft below sea level. Besides this, the area contains other bodies of gold-bearing stone. The representatives o£ an overseas company are now on the ground trying to ascertain its value with a view to purchase. Another 50 tons of stone has been taken out, and is ready for treatment. The ore from this mine is known as sulphide, such as they have at "IVaihi, and contains galina, copper, zinc, gold, and silver. This class of ore, which is usually found in large bodies, seldom contains free gold. For this reason sulphide ore has always been overlooked on the Thames goldflelds.
