Dogs used to work hard for a living in England, but in 1839 an Art of Parliament prohibited their use as beasts of burden. They used to be employed in dog carts. They thought nothing of conveying their masters 50 or 60 miles in ;i day, with no more sustenance than bread soaked in beer. i
