AUCKLAND CENTRE.

WILL JARVIS MEET TABIS I ANOTHER POLO REFEREE RESIGNS. At' last night's meeting of the Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, a proposal by Mr. Harry Moore that efforts should be made to have the national sprint champion, W7 J. Jarvifl, of Dunedin, participate against Taris (Franco) at the Tepid Baths next Monday, was approved.

It was decided to extend an invitatation to Jarvie immediately. If he swims at the carnival the admission charges will be 3/ for reservations, 2/ for adults and 1/ for children, but if he docs not come to Auckland they will be 2/0, 1/0 and 1/. The New Zealand Council advised that the Chinese breaststroke swimmer iiwok Chun Hang, was unable to come to New Zealand. , ~, The centre voted £15 15/ to the Ponsonby Club toward the cost of sending Mona Leydon to Sydney on Saturday for the New South Wales ladies' championships on March 10. The University Club wae granted permission to hold a carnival in the lepid Baths on April 0. A vote of appreciation was passed to the honorary secretary, Mr. W. Batty, the assistant-secrtary, Mr. H. Moore, and the chairman, Mr. R. M. Sheiheld, tor their services in organising the Mew /.ealand championship meeting. The presentation of a special trophy to Walden Johnson in recognition ot his tine performances as runner-up in the haltmile and mile championships, was approved. • When letters from Dr. T. H. Pet tit and Mr. Len Brighton, resigning as water polo referees, were read the latter explained what had led up to their action. l>. Pottit, as chairman of the Auckland Water Polo Referees' Association, and he as secretary, had appointed referees of matches since the formation of the Auckland Water Polo Control Board. Learning prior to the New Zealand championships that six games were to be played, Mr. Brighton asked Mr. Eric Nelson, secretary to the Auckland Water Polo Contro. Board, how they were to be decided, an.he was given to understand that all would bo played at the carnivals in the evenings He then interviewed tlie assistant-secretary of the New Zealand Council, Mr. Harry Moore, who told him the New Zealand Council had instructed that Mr. R. J. Upson was to be referee of all games and that Dr. Pettit and himself were to be the goal-scorers. When this information was conveyed to Dr. Pettit, the last-namsd took strong exception to the arrangements, and said he would certainly have some way in the appointments. Mr. Brighton said he referred tne matter to two members of the New Zealand Council, but neither knew of the instructions imputed to the council by Mr. Moore. Eventually, Dr. Pettit exerted his authority, and it was decided that Dr. Pettit, Mr. Upson and himself should be referees, but that Mr. Upson should control the games in which the Canterbury team took part. "Sir Brighton asked whether Mr. Moore could table the letter he said he had received from the council. If not, he asked what right Mr. Moore had to make the statements. Mr. Walter Batty, secretary of the centre, said he had received a letter from tho council, but had not brought it to the meeting. The letter stated, he remembered that Mr. Upson was to be convener of judges and was to confer with Messrs. L. Annand and C. Bryant, of Christchureh, both members cf the council. Mr. Annand definitely stated that Dr. Pettit and Mr. Brighton were to be goal-scorers. As Dr. Pettit and Mr. Brighton regarded their treatment as a vote of no-confidence in their ability as referees, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr. D. Mulvihill, that the discussion be adjourned until the council's letter was tabled, and all interested parties were present.
