THE NEW WARFARE.
Recent outspoken statements of some of tlie leading statesmen and literary men of the day on the imminence of war are very disquieting. The indisputable possibility of a ■mechanical warfare to be waged on civilians is the most serious problem ever put to the people of all countries. Women who have the welfare of children at heart, and in whom the strong maternal protective instinct is fully aroused, are forced to face some very disheartening and cheerless facts. The new. sinister method of killing and maiming human beings will be silent and invisible. England is providing her civilians with means of protection from gas poisoning. Underground gasproof shelters are being built. Gas mask drill is being: inaugurated. That sane-minded people the world over are striving for peace is evidenced by the news of demonstrations and anti-war propaganda published recently, but, if these movements for peace fail entirely we will be in deadly danger. Women who feel responsible for the lives of children in New Zealand have the right to ask for gasproof shelters and gas masks. 'People should be trained and organised, who can assist during a raid. Mothers and teachers need lessons to enable them to adjust gas masks. Young children and infants will naturally object to the stifling sensations always experienced when the mask is first worn. Now is the time to prepare children for this ordeal, not when the gas is here in reality. A MOTHER.
