THE AUSTRALIANS. MATCH WITH AUCKLAND. KEEN GAME ENDS IN DRAW. In the toughest struggle of their tour the Australian hockey team played in exciting draw of three goals apiece with Auckland (the holders of the New Zealand Challenge Shield) at Eden l'ark on Saturday afternoon. A great pace was maintained throughout, although many movements which were brilliant in conception broke down on account of the ball bumping erratically. Australia led 3—2 till the last minute, when Auckland scored the goal which saved the day for them. The teams were: — Australia (Green and Gold).—Goal: L. T. Reid. full-backs: K. Le Lievrc, W. From a free hit Australia advanced, nut were checked, and the Auckland forwards advanced until held up on the circle edge. After an exciting interchange of hits the Auckland forwards worked to Auckland's circle, to be repulsed by Jones. Play veered across to Chapman, who sent in to Floyd. .His progress was stopped by La Lievrc, and play drifted to midfiekl. Smart work by Robertson gave the Auckland vanguard a f >oting in the circle, but by hard hitting the ball crossed the goal-line. A11.,n broke away and passed to Milner. who reached the circle, only to be checked, and from tight play Smith cleared. A run by Chapman and the Watts brothers gave the locals a footing, and Australia conceded a penalty corner without result. Auckland pressed;, from the right, and Australia saved witli the sideline. Milner broke and was stopped by Clark, who returned to his forwards, who swarmed the circle. Le Lievre saved, the situation. Auckland Open Score. Another fast attack by Auckland followed and E. Watts, coming across to the left, notched a fine goal. The locals attacked from the bully, and Reid saved a hot shot, but a few moments later Robertson connected and rattled the net. Allan headed a fine run for Australia, but the movement broke down through off-side. Still Australia pressed, until a big clearance by Clark again placed the locals in the visitors' circle. "Kicks" relieved the visitors, who raced to Auckland's end, only to be repulsed. The local forwards were now attacking strongly, and Chapman sent in a centre shot that C. Watts just missed. A free hit relieved Australia, and play gravitated to Auckland's twenty-five. A bad miss by Robertson gave Allen an opening, but Clark saved on the circle edge. E. Watts broke through, passed to E. Watts, but Wellbourne failed to connect and Rothwell cleared. • Milner and Allen repeatedly led the visitors to the locals' circle, until Stening's shot missed the net. An exchange of hits, marked by clever work by the backs followed, until from a hit by Robertson the ball beat Chapman, a twenty-five bully resulting. With Auckland on the attack half-time sounded. Auckland V 2 Australia 0 Exciting Second Spell. Just after the bully Milner broke through, but Jones stopped hiin and sent the ball to E. Watts. Line play followed until Milner and Penman came through, and Australia's hopes looked bright, until Clark cleared. The scene was quickly changed to Australia's end and a corner gained. Australia intercepted the shot, Haytor clearing, and Australia > moved to Auckland's circle, Milner netting with a fine shot from the circle edge. Auckland 2 Australia 1 Auckland retaliated with a sharp attack, gaining a penalty corner, from which Australia secured a free hit. The visiting forwards, coming from the left, attacked strongly, but the local defence held. Auckland returned to the attack, C. Watts sending to Chapman, who centred. E. Watts' shot waa well saved by the goalie. Australia broke through down the centre, and with only Wattam in front of them a goal seemed certain, but Auckland's goalie ran out and, with a spectacular kick, sent the ball to the half-line. The Auckland forwards then moved to the visitors' circle, but just as quickly Australia reversed the situation and Stenning's shot missed. The Australians came again and Wattam saved, conceding a penalty corner, from which Rothwcll netted. Auckland 2 Australia 2 Australia kept on the pressure, and another exciting bout in the circle ended in the net being missed. Floyd broke through with a solo effort and reached the circle, his shot being stopped in a spectacular manner by Reid. Auckland now had the pressure on, and things looked dangerous. E. Watts over-ran and a 'persistent attack ensued. Visitors Lead. Australia reversed the situation, and. reaching the circle, Wattam and Jones saved, but Penman hooked a high one into the net. Australia 3 Auckland 2 Down swept the Auckland forwards, but Chapman's shot missed. A few moments later C. Watts over-ran a fine chance. Penman then led another attack for the visitors, and was countered by the smart work of Clark. From a centre by Chapman C. Watts connected, but lifted the ball over the net. Still pressing, Jones sent into the circle to C. Watts, who again missed the net. The prolonged attack broke down when Australia secured from a roll-in, and Allen sent to Penman. The left wing sent back to Allen, who was stopped by Wattam, a corner resulting. The play was now travelling up and down field at a great rate, and Auckland pressed hard to gain a corner. Speight, vice-president of the Auckland Hockey Association, presided at a dinner to the Australian and, Auckland teams at the Hotel Auckland on Saturday night. Among the toaste honoured were: "The Australian Association and Team," proposed by Mr. Speight, and responded to by Mr. W. Rothwell, manager of the touring team; Ihe New Zealand Association," proposed by Mr. H. Flockart, and responded to by Mr. L. C. Kent; "The Auckland Association and Team," proposed by the Australian captain, Mr. A. Lee, and responded to by the Auckland captain, Mr. C. Watts; "The Umpires," proposed by Mr. G. Milner and responded to by Messrs. A. Williams and A. Playle. . . The two teams went for a picnic to Swanson yesterday, when a cricket match resulted in a win for the Australians.
