Australia Desires td Waive Obligations. ITALIAN " DISCRIMINATION." (Received 1 p.m.) CANBERRA, July 27. The Minister of Trade and Customs, Mr. T. W. White, stated in the House of Representatives that Britain had been asked if she would he willing to waive certain rights under the Ottawa agreement which would enable the Commonwealth to meet Italian requests with a view to concluding a trade treaty with Italy.
Mr. White stated that Italy had been asking for tariff concessions, but the Commonwealth could not acquiesce without infringing her obligations to Britain. If in the meanwhile Italy's proposed restriction on Australian wool operated in the nature of discrimination against Australian products it would constitute a contravention of the Anglo-Italian treaty of 1883.
The Commonwealth Government was watching the position very carefully.
A London message states that the "Yorkshire Observer" says it is generally believed that Italy's wool purchases in recent years were for use, not for speculation. Consequently she will soon require further supplies.
Responsible authorities think Italy is bluffing in regard to her threat to Australia.
