DEMPSTER 69.

TOP FOR SCOTLAND.

New Zealander Last Man Out

Against Australia.

TLEETWOOD-SMITH AGAIN,

.United P.A.—Electric Telegraph-Copyright) (Received 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 27. The Australian cricketers commenced a three-day match against Scotland, at' Edinburgh. The home side comprises W. Anderson, C. S. Dempster, P. Gibb, T. Hart, D. Hiddleston, A. Innes, J. Jones, A. Simpson, A. Smith, T. Spowart, J. Farquhar.

Australia omitted Wood full. Brad man, Darling, Grimmett and O'Reilly.

The weather was fine and the wicket pood. Anderson won tho toss from Kippax and Scotland batted.

Acute detective work by the Scottish Cricket Union revealed that Dempster's parentage is Scottish. The New Zealander opened against Wall and Ebeling, batting admirably.

The fast bowlers were unable to get much life from the pitch, and the New Zealander drove and glanced them to leg with confidence.

Dempster monopolised the scoring, which was slow. Driving and cutting well he reached 50 in 135 minutes, and was the only batsman to show any confidence.

The others fell easy victims to Fleetwood-Smith, who occasionally troubled Dempster. The latter should have been stumped at 55 when he jumped out to drive Fleetwood-Smith's wrong 'un.

Dempster was unlucky not to carry his bat. Nine wickets were down when he snicked Wall to Oldfield, who took a good catch.

The innings lasted 160 minutes, and Dempster hit five fours. Ponsford and Brown opened for Australia in miserable conditions —cold, cloudy and windy. Ponsford was caught at the wicket when the total was 30. McCahe brightened the scoring and Chipperfield was showing delightful form when he was dismissed. McCabe was at the top of his form thus far, and batted for 80 minutes. Scores:— SCOTLAND.—First Innings. AUSTRALIA £10,000 UP. (Received 11 n.m.) LONDON, July 27.

The Australian Press Association's special representative at Edinburgh understands that, "without the Test at Leeds, the takings for the tour of the Australian cricketers have already exceeded by several thousand pounds the amount for the corresponding period of 1930, which was a record.

Australia's share of the gates for the 1934 tour approaches £10,000 above the same period of 1930.
