There was some amusement in the House of Representatives yesterday when Mr. Langs tone endeavoured to use for political purposes the Government's decision to grant £500 to Miss Jean Batten. Mr. F. Langstone (Lab., Waimarino) asked whether in view of the evident buoyant state, of the national finances the Government would grant £500 to mothers of families whose breadwinners were on relief work in recognition of the sacrifice, bravery and endurance of these splendid women in their struggle for existence. "Much as we admire the bravery and endurance of Miss Jean Batten, in her courageous flight to Australia," the member proceeded, "the fortitude and bravery of our mothers " Mr. Speaker: I am afraid the member is making a speech. Amid loud laughter Mr. Langstone resumed his seat.
