KILLING OPOSSUMS.
BAN ON USE OF FIREARMS. EAST COAST DISCUSSION. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) GISBORNE, this day. Criticism of the regulations prohibiting the use of firearms for killing opossums after they have been trapped was voiced at a meeting of the East Coast Acclimatisation Society. Several members stated that shooting was the most humane method of killing, and trappers often found that an animal had only been stunned when struck on the head. When it was pointed out that the object of the regulation was to prevent abuse in the use of firearms, 110 further action was taken. It was reported that there were excellent prospects for the season, which opens to-day, and that already a large number of licenses has been taken out.
