NEW CARGO SHIP.
FOR THE TASMAN TRADE. WAITAKI IN PORT. The latest addition to the Union Steam Ship Company's fleet, the steamer Waitaki, is at the Prince's wharf, on her maiden visit to New Zealand. A modern vessel of 2212 tons gross, she will replace the Wainui in the Welling-ton-BIulT-Melbourne service. She is commanded by Captain A. S. Dalgleish, who has lie en with the company for more than 20 years. He is pleased with the vessel's performance on her trip out from Glasgow, where she was built. On the voyage to New Zealand she travelled via Suez. At Safaga Bay, in the Red Sea, she discharged coal and loaded phosphate, and after a stormy trip from Ceylon to Adelaide she loaded at that port and at Edithburg for New Zealand. She also lias cargo from South Island ports for discharge here. The Waitaki is to eail at 5 p.m. to day jfor Wellington, whence she will commence her regular run in the transTasman service. The Wainui is to be used in the New Zealand coastal trade. The new steamer has a speed of about 12 knots, and is almost identical in appearance to the Wainui, although about 1000 tons heavier. Her engines, eteam reciprocating, are amidships, as are the oil-lired furnaces.
