CHESS CHAMPION.
VISIT OF DR. A. ARIiEKHINE.
Cable advice was received in Auckland to-day that Dr. A. Arlekhinc, world's chess champion, and probably the greatest chess player of all time, has decided to compete at the Centenary Congress to be held at Melbourne during the Christmas holiday season. Afterwards Dr. Arlekhine will come to New Zealand, where he will spend four or five weeks. At the Auckland Chess Club's rooms on Saturday night a lightning tourney was held, the winner being> Mr. G. Sale. Eight games were played, Messrs. Sale and J. Bnchan tying for first plane, each with seven wins. In the play-off Mr. Sale won after a hard fight. Others who did well were G. M. Cleghorn, 0 points, C. G. Lennard, A. Blcnkarn and B. Gough, each 5 A points.
