WATER IN MINES.

PUMPING AT HIKURANGI. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. Although the miners at Hikurangi were faced with an anxious period yesterday, all is said to be clear again this morning. The drive became blocked yesterday morning, the generator was flooded and for a short time the pumps were out of action. As a precautionary measure the manager, Mr. H. Brady, ordered the day shift out of the mine, and the men engaged in a desperate fight with the still rising water. A drain was dug clearing the water away and making the dismantling of the generator plant possible.- The parts were hurriedly dried, assembled and the pumps operating again before the flooding became acute. Smart work, on this occasion, saved what would have been a very serious interruption in the working of the min«, and the afternoon shift was enabled to recommence hewing. At the Waro Collieries water was said to Iks rising at the rate of 6in per hour for a time, and it became necessarv to shift the pumps to higher levels. Here, too, the position was stated to be well in hand this morning.
