BIRKENHEAD.

The Birkenhead Borough Council met last night, the Mayor, Mr. George Mills, presiding. Condolence.—"V otes of condolence were passed with the relatives of the late Mr. John Fenton Bell, an old resident of Birkenhead, and Mr. M. L. Wilkins, member of the Takapuna Borougn Council. Bus Trips.—lt was decided to request the Bus Company to meet the midnight forry from Auckland on every weeknight, and also to notify the council pnor to any change in time-table. The Licensing Authority is also to be advised of the council's wishes in respect to the midnight service. Sustenance Pay.—During consideration of the letter from the Mayor of Palinerston North, conveying resolutions- of a public meeting protesting against the Unemployment Board paying sustenance at reduced rates in place o£ employment at the old rate, the Mayor stated that none of the Birkenhead men were on sustenance. Mr. John Macdonald said that while sustenance had not been applied at Birkenhead, they could not shut their eyes to what was happening to their neighbours, as it were. The council endorsed the protest. Water Levy.—A levy of £80 11/2 was notified by the North Shore Water Board, based on the quantity of water pumped from Lake Pupuke last year. Heavy Traffic—Mr. F. Morris and the town clerk are to attend the conference in the Auckland Town Hall, on Monday, 25th inst., to consider the basis of allocation of heavy motor vehicle charges in No. 2 district. The Commissioner of Transport is to be present. Tree Planting.—Mr. J. Macdonald advocated planting the Birkenhead Domain, of 100 acres, in Glenfield Road, with commercial trees, which, he claimed, would be a great asset some years hence. The area of ten acres at Verran's Corner should also be planted in native trees. The Mayor said he favoured planting, and instanced the beauty of the Sugar Company's Chelsea bush. The matter was referred to the parks committee. Water Charges.—The advisability of continuing the present system of water charges until the end of September, and then charging for water by meter, in view of the supply from the city soon being available, was referred for a report to the town clerk.
